For several years I taught Virgil’s Aeneid using John Dryden’s beautiful (and very difficult) 1697 translation, the King James Bible of ancient epics. I learned to love it, but my 9th graders continually struggled to understand and engage with the text. Since then, I’ve moved to Fagles’ translation, which I find more engaging than Fitzgerald’s, but before abandoning ship, I spent about 200 hours producing this video series explaining the Dryden text. Bon Appétit.
